Track and Field season begins with a bang for MUAC

Shield Round 1

Melbourne University Athletics Club has started the track and field season in fine style, inspired by the success of the Australian Flames at the Delhi Commonwealth Games.

A mild Saturday afternoon at the Moonee Valley Athletics Centre a Aberfeldie was mercifully free of the moths, false starts and monkeys that have captured the headlines at the Commonwealth Games. The start of Athletics Victoria’s Shield competition on Saturday, 9th of October saw some pleasing early season for MUAC. The Men’s Division 1 team jumped to the top of the leader board winning the first round of competition, whilst the Women’s Division 1 team were only a few points from a win, claiming second.

Individual brilliance was on display as well. Emulating Steve Hooker, Anthony Hanna won the men’s pole vault with a jump of 4.25m while Cath Macrae completed the pole vault double, winning the women’s event, clearing 3.15m. Jo Bromfield took first place in the women’s triple jump, hopping, stepping and jumping 11.05m. The evergreen Paul Kennedy resumed where he left off last track and field season winning the 2000m walk with a Tallent like display in 9:02.7. Summer Manager Hamish Beaumont won the 1500m in 4:14.73. The 4x100m Women’s relay team comprehensively won.
