A dramatic evening of competition under trying conditions at Lakeside Stadium on Thursday night saw Bridey Delaney and Patrick Tiernan crowned Australian 10000m Champions at the 56th Zatopek meet.  MUAC athletes were in action across several events. A quartet of MUAC pole vaulters (Cath Macrae, Tamara Mancuso, Jem Gibbs and Kath Iannello) took part in the Steve Hooker Pole Vault Challenge, with a pair of vaulters combining and the maximum combined height winning.  Strong, cool cross winds and intermittent rain made for difficult vaulting all night. Macrae topped the standings recording the highest jump of the competition at 3.20m along with two others, with Mancuso not far behind with on 3.00m. Ellen Schaef ran a strong solo 1500m to clock another national qualifier and take 2nd place in 4:37. Nick Earl took it out hard in the feature 10000m, chasing Dan Quin’s club record but couldn’t quite get there with a 30:08 performance. There’ll be another attempt at the record at the Steigen Classic next weekend in Geelong.
