The return of Shield: Summer is coming

AV Shield Round 1

Dig out the lycra, caps and sunscreen, Shield is back!

Finally, all the hard winter training was being put to the test. AV Shield competition kicked off this Saturday in Werribee. There were many prerace nerves as we were getting ready to blow away the cold cobwebs for the first races of Track season. It turned out Athletics Victoria had a few more cobwebs to blow away too! Saturday marked the start of the new competition system for AV which had us all mystified. The essence of the new system is that it now allows for a standardised ranking of clubs and athletes, and an online portal where athletes can log on and view a history of their performances. Gone are the days of diaries and stickers! Despite the confusion of now having to pre-enter races and lengthy delays it was great to be back wearing the sash for competition. Coaches were there in full swing too giving the team support and encouragement. There were debutants in both track and field events with new shot putters, high jumpers and triple jumpers setting new personal bests. It can also be proudly reported on that both the Men’s and Women’s relay teams had very convincing wins in the 4x200m relay. As a result of our ladies dominating the jumps and our men blitzing the 5000m Melbourne Uni won the day with the highest team scores in Open Men and Women! Can’t wait to see what this season has to bring.

Worth noting: it is important to check your results online to make sure they are correct. Due to the new system it doesn’t allow for errors, such as running in the wrong lane. More importantly if you have queries about results you need to email AV, or else your points and times will not be amended.
