Sports Without Borders joins in at MUAC Christmas Gift

2014 MUAC Christmas Gift and Fundraiser

IMG_5892Melbourne University Athletics Club’s traditional end of year holiday celebrations on Tuesday 16th, December, took on a charitable flavour this year with funds raised for Sports Without Borders and the Transcend Running Academy. With MUAC’s club rooms converted into a cinema for the evening, MUAC members and guests watched Transcend, a documentary about 2012 Boston Marathon winner and founder of the Transcend Running Academy, Wesley Korir. Sports Without Borders Tina Thorburn, in attendance for the evening, spoke of their goal of promoting social inclusion for young people from new and emerging communities through involvement in sport. Earlier in the evening Jarrod Pageot took out the 2014 MUAC Christmas Gift. Running of a handicap of 1m, Pageot (likely fuelled by caffeine from his newly opened cafe) never looked trouble over the 110m event, coasting into the final and winning comfortable from a strong field.  Rachel Painter took out the 1000m Handicap from Alison Bryant Smith, with a 30m victory. MUAC athletes then convened in the MUAC Club Rooms for a BBQ and refreshments before the documentary. Many thanks must go to Gen Blanch, MUAC Social Secretary, and her willing band of helpers for organising the evening.

MUAC athletes backed up from the gift with the final round of AV Shield on Thursday, 18th December at Aberfeldie.
