Premier teams take third as Earl claims club record

Round 9 XCR’15: Burnley Half Marathon

There were no half measures for MUAC at the Victorian Half Marathon Championships with 6 teams of MUAC athletes getting Father’s Day off to a rapid start. A club record, bronze medal, two thirds for the Premier teams and a slew of personal bests headlined the MUAC accomplishments on the fast Burnley. Nick Earl and Zac Newman took control of the chase pack (with Commonwealth Games marathoner Liam Adams and World Cross Country Championships representative Mitch Brown in the lead) and whittled the group¬†down over the middle sections of the race. Coming into the final 5km, only Nick Wightman, recent silver medallist at the Australian Cross Country Championships could handle the pace, and not for long. Newman and Earl reached the final straight together, with Earl out kicking his club mate to record a new club record 67:49. Newman also dipped under the old record to record 67:55, a big personal best.

Al Bryant-Smith, led home the MUAC women in formidable style, running 1:26:04 for a big PB and captaining the Premier Women’s team to third place, with Aislinn Prendergast, Ella Trimboli and Annie Carter all finishing inside the top 35. Most importantly Al supplied MUAC’s secret cheering weapon, her Mum Bron, the ne plus ultra of cheering, who made sure everyone was running at their best.

MUAC’s Premier Men matched their colleagues to take a impressive third place. Charlie Park (72:41) ¬†and Winter Manager Max Ueda (72:54) ran very strongly as a duo to record PB’s, with Winter Captain Dave McDonald coming through late in the race to fill the final spot in the Premier Team.

MUAC’s Division Three women are closing in on a promotion berth with one round remaining, taking fourth place and needing a strong Tan Relays to press their case. MUAC’s Men fielded teams in Division’s Two (7th) , Three (7th) and Five (2nd), arriving on the line with the fourth biggest cohort of the day. In intraclub rivalries, Gerarde Kelly forsook Saturday speed golf and took the victory over Paul Shortis. Many thanks to Ellen for the photography and cheering.

MUAC will be back in action for the ultimate round of XCR’15, the Tan Relays on September 19.
