MUAC heating up for Shield Final

Shield Round 12.

Melbourne University Athletics Club hit the track on Saturday at Meadowglen knowing it was one of only four clubs in Victoria sending both a Mens and Womens Division One team to the Athletics Victoria Shield Final.  With the finals berths secure, focus shifted to individual performances and rivalries as the competition for positions on the team heats up.

The White Train’s Men’s Team Captain Mitch Mackenzie leapt 1.89m to win the high jump, coming close to his personal best.  Squad mate and triple jumper Jo Bromfield claimed the long jump win with a season’s best leap of 5.50m.  MUAC President Steve Edwards continued his strong return to form soaring 6.21m to take a win in the long jump.

Multi event tyros Laura Portaro and Kiao Inthavong powered through four events each to take their season tally to 29 apiece, only one behind Kath Iannello, the MUAC athlete who has done the most events this summer.  Inthavong continued his rivalry with Leigh ‘Babyface’ Goedecke and Chris ‘’Animal’ Xu over a variety of events, and no clear winner emerged.  With the scoring system for the intra-MUAC contest shrouded in mystery, it is likely that the victor will be crowned after a winner takes all pole vault showdown.

The White Train returns to competition this Saturday, 5th of February at Aberfeldie for the last round of Shield competition before the Shield Final the following Saturday at Knox.
