AV Shield Round 10
The AV Shield Finals looms ahead, with the regular season concluding on Saturday at Aberfeldie with a frenzy of qualification and selection attempts for MUAC athletes. Both MUAC Division 1 teams have secured their positions in the AV Shield Final and competition is strong for positions on the team. The first showdown of the day came in the 3000m walk with four athletes vying for three spots. Phil van Dueren was the unlucky athlete to miss out, in cruel circumstances, crossing the line in third place but being disqualified. There were medal winners a plenty in the volunteering stakes as MUAC athletes jumped in to do there bit at the shot put pit. Many thanks to Ahmed, Phil, Nick, Ellen, Tim and everyone who helped out. Congratulations to Allyson O’Brien on her return to the track, putting on the spikes and flying around a very creditable 800m. There were also some fine individual performances with Sam Blake rolling out a strong second lap to clock 1:53.40 to win the Division 1 800m in a race that featured three MUAC athletes and new SUAC recruit Julian Baker. Ellen Schaef was just outside the national qualifier winning the 800m in 2:12.60 and will look to hit the time at next weeks Shield Final. Nick Earl and Frankie Conway went 1-2 in the 5000m at 15:06 and 15:07 with Conway checking out a PB in the process. Aaron Page and Carmen Deane both honed their Shot Put skills ahead of Shield Final with wins and Gwen Thornton collected victory in the Hammer with 22.75m. In other competition Martin Mashford clocked 8:22 for 3000m at the Hunter Track Classic and Fred Smithers carved a second off his 800m PB to run 2:08.2. Team selection will be a hot topic this week ahead of the team announcement on Thursday night.
MUAC two top teams will be in action this Saturday at Lakeside at the AV Shield Final from 10am. Come on down and join us on the hill to support the sash.
