Kirwan makes his mark with marathon debut
2014 Melbourne Marathon
Mark Kirwan’s marathon debut headlined a big day of PB’s and tough racing for MUAC athletes at the 2014 Melbourne Marathon festival. Kirwan, off the back of a strong winter of XCR racing, took bronze in the Victorian Marathon Championships, and 9th in the race, running 2:23:17. In a pack with Julian Spence and Brady Threlfall, Kirwan got to halfway in 70:30. The second half saw him move clear, consolidating his top ten position and running strongly back to the MCG to record a very strong debut performance. Anthony Woodward crossed not far behind in 2:43 with MUAC Life Member Dan Quin finishing in 2:48:32, both of them in the top 100. Virginia Grant (3:26:08, 88th) and Annie Carter (3:36:18, 164th) both ran very well after a winter of good training.
The Mens 10km was an MUAC shootout with Zac Newman, Martin Mashford and Nick Earl all dicing for the win during a hectic and tactical race. Mashford took the club honours, running a PB to come 2nd in 31:04, with Newman 3rd in 31:09 and Earl 5th in 31:16. Matt Irons found a welcome return to form to run 35:21 for 25th place.
