Round 11 Shield Report
The spur of a rapidly approaching finals campaign has provoked Melbourne University Athletics Club athletes to come out in large numbers for Round 11 of Athletics Victoria’s Shield Competition at Aberfeldie on Thursday, the 21st of January. The prospect of all five MUAC open teams making the finals has racing hard to ensure a berth in the team and testing their form out against team mates and cross town rivals.
Competition commenced on the warm summer’s night with a win by Paul Kennedy in the 3000m walk, as is the custom. Lauren Jauncey, in an impressive lead up to the Country Championships, won the 200m in 25.32. Jacquie Sharples showed impressive form over the 400m hurdles to win comfortably in 64.92. Janelle O’Sullivan had another fine win in the High Jump, leaping 1.70m, just in front of team mate Hannah Alderton. Jarred Pageot, training squad mate of O’Sullivan and Alderton, continued his late season burst of form to win the Long Jump with a 7.00m effort.
Congratulations to all who competed last night, especially those hardy 3000m runners who started racing at 10:15pm in a race with 114 competitors.
The Athletics Victoria Shield Competition is quickly building to a finale, with Round 12 on Thursday, 28th of January. The Region and Shield Final follow on the first two Saturdays in February.
