MUAC Annual Dinner

4652309532_41e3ac3c83Melbourne University Athletics Club celebrated a successful year with its Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation at the Kent Hotel on Saturday, 22nd May.  At a glittering black tie affair plaudits and awards were given for the premier performances by MUAC athletes in the past twelve months. President Stephen Edwards reflected on a year of significant growth and improvement for MUAC and Russell Clowes, Vice President of Athletics Victoria, spoke of the exciting prospects for the sport in the next few years.

Irie Hill won the Henegan Trophy for setting several World Records over the season in the 40+ Pole Vault.  Jarrod Pageot claimed Best Club Track and Field Athlete – Male with a season that included the Australian Junior Long Jump Championship, the Victorian Open Long Jump Championship and a personal best of 7.36m. Lauren Jauncey won Best Club Track and Field Athlete – Female  for a season of domination over 100m and 200m in the Northwest Region and for achieving a place in the final of the 200m at the Australian Championships and Commonwealth Games Selection Trials.  Sophie Barker won the Best Road and jpseCross Country Athlete – Female for a stellar winter season, running all ten races for the season and being in the top two MUAC athletes every race.  Hamish Beaumont won the Best Road and Cross Country Athlete – Male for a consistent season of racing, capped off with a sub 50 minute 15km race in Ballarat. Jacquie Sharples received the Coaches’ Encouragement Award for a season that saw her make the final of the 400m hurdles at the Australian Championships as well as display talent across a varied range of events throughout the domestic competition.  David Paroissien was recognised for his service to the club as Winter Manager for the last two years.

It was also pleasing to be able to recognise a number of the Club’s junior and upcoming stars of the sport.

With the formal part of the evening concluded, MUAC athletes celebrated well into the evening at the Kent Hotel and then Brunswick St for some late night dancing.
