Fearless five feted for first at fresh fracas
AV Shield Round 7
MUAC’s winning ways continued at Williamstown for AV Shield’s Round 7, with the performances of five women on the day sufficient to claim the victory in Division 1 Women. On a windy day at Newport Athletics Track, Carmen Deane’s four events, including a victory in the Div 1 100m hurdles, and Genevieve Lawrence’s three events, with a win in the Div 1 discus, provided the backbone of the team’s performance. Strong runs by Isobell Monotti in the 100m and 400m and Hannah Alderton’s 100m and long jump added more valuable points to the tally. Sarah McSweeney topped it off with a convincing win in the 3000m Steeplechase. Equal first by Cath Macrae and Kath Iannello in the pole vault, held at the Rawlinson during the week, provided yet more points for an improbable victory.
The MUAC Division 1 Men took a more conventional approach to victory with nearly 30 MUAC men filing all scoring positions in the 100m, 400m, 1500m, 3000m Steeplechase, long jump and javelin. Once again the back up relay team came to the fore, getting out of the blocks (very) slowly but making sure they got the baton around for the points. Wins came from Mark Kirwan in the 3000m Steeplechase, Nick Earl in the 1500m, Leon D’Onofrio in the pole vault, and Aaron Page in the discus. With three rounds of AV Shield remaining the Div 1 Men sit 11 points clear on top of the ladder with the Div 1 Women 8 points clear on top as well.
MUAC will be in action at the Zatopek:10 on Thursday and at AV Knockout on Saturday. Round 8 of AV Shield is on Thursday, 18th December at Aberfeldie.
