Cleland and Brown win Mile titles at Rawlinson

2012 Victorian Mile Championships

Coreena Cleland and Mitch Brown won titles at the Victorian Mile Championships on Thursday, 16th of February as 240 athletes raced around Melbourne University’s Rawlinson Track.  Meet 4 of the 2012 Victorian Milers Club saw Cleland (Deakin) take the race in 4:50.4 over Melissa Vandewater (4:52.4, Glenhuntly) and Ni’Ia Hothersall (4:54.4, Richmond).  Melbourne University Athletics Club’s Rosie Donegan and Melanie Fayen claimed fifth and sixth place in the final, both dipping under 5 minutes.

Mitch Brown (Essendon) won a tactical, and sometimes physical, race in 4:11.7 with Ryan Geard (4:12.8, Essendon) surprising the pundits to take second over Stephen Dineen (4:13.1, Box Hill).
The competition was willing over both 800m and Mile, with 8 Mile races and 18 800m races.  With 240 athletes competing, it was the second largest competition in Victorian Milers Club history.  Runners from ACT, Tasmania, NSW and WA competed, looking for the close, competitive racing that the VMC has become known for.

Melbourne University medical student Johnny Rayner claimed the A 800m race in 1:51.2, in a quality field.  Another medical student, MUAC’s Jordan Mayston claimed a big personal best running 1:55.7.
Many thanks must go to the VMC for staging the meet, Melbourne University Sport’s Katie Duncan for her assistance in the weeks leading up to the event, MUAC’s Matt Irons, Kiao Inthavong and Laura Portaro for organising the BBQ, MUAC’s Max Williams and Tim Thomas for help with set up and packing up.

Competition will return to Melbourne University’s Rawlinson Track on Thursday, 23rd Feburary for 5000m races and Rare Air Club Pole Vault.  Be there!
