Bronze as MUAC goes the distance

2016 Victorian Track Relay Championships

Records were under threat at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday as the MUAC Men came close to the club record in the 4x800m, taking bronze in 7:50.36.  The team of Sam Blake, Will Meggitt, James Maguire and Julian Baker ran very well, following home a St Kevin’s AC team (with Olympians Alex Rowe and Peter Bol) that smashed the Victorian Record, running 7:22.24 in a dominant display.  Blake lead the team off well handing off to Baker in second.  Baker took the sensible decision not to chase down Olympian Bol, consolidating second place with Mitch Thompson from Deakin in hot pursuit. Maguire battled well with Yohan Phillip, a Unimelb graduate now attending a small agricultural college in the suburbs.  Meggitt chased hard over the final laps, closing the gap on Deakin and consolidating the bronze medal.

MUAC’s 4x800m Women were lead off by team coordinator Ellen Schaef, fresh from a week of working the phones to get athletes to run, clocking a very impressive solo 2:12. This was followed by commendable runs from Stella Radford and Elizabeth Ruach, both returning from injury, and Louise Organ, who bravely stepped in at the last minute to fill the team.

The MUAC 4x400m men moved closer to the final delivering a 9 second improvement on 2015 and finishing 11th, just 3 places out of the final in the highly competitive event.  An eventful 4x100m saw anchor leg David Park, stepping up to help out the club, manoeuvring around a rival athlete as the leg started. The Mens Medley Relay rounded out the day, with some unconventional team selections needed.

The day was led off by MUAC’s honourable gentleman in the 40+ 4x1500m. Team Captain Tim Thomas marshalled the troops with aplomb, pushing the team into a creditable fourth place.

A big thanks to all the athletes who put their hand up to run and to Ellen Schaef and Seamus Hayes for the their team management efforts.

MUAC will be back in action this Saturday for Round 7 of AV Shield at Werribee.
