Melbourne University takes silver at AUG

2013 Australian University Games

sarah mcsMelbourne University took a strong athletics team to the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast during the October mid semester break.  Competition took place at the QEII track in Brisbane whilst the socialising took place down the Gold Coast Highway in the heart of the Gold Coast.
The Winged Victory men took second place behind an imposing Sydney University team, whilst the Winged Victory women took home fourth place, enough to give the combined team second place.
Simon Greig, Darcy Sutton, Deluca Lawson-Matthews and World Championship representative Alex Rowe started the team off with an impressive victory in the Sprint Medley Relay over a Sydney University team also featuring a member of Australian team to Moscow, Joshua Ralph, in one of the races of the meet.  Tim Papas claimed gold in the Pole Vault and Harry Smithers took bronze in the 10000m.  Sarah McSweeney, Winged Victory Captain, took second in the 3000m Steeplechase, behind fellow Australian Championship medallist Milly Clark. Alex Rowe stepped up from his normal 800m to win the 1500m on day three, with Simon Greig taking silver in the 100m, and getting another silver in the 4x100m.  Iain Douglas rounded out the medal tally with bronze in the 400m.  McSweeney took another silver medal on day 4, again behind Clark in the 5000m with Harry Smithers also winning 5000m silver behind Australian Representative Hugh Williams.  The mens 4x400m relay team took out the silver behind their fierce rivals SU and Darcy Sutton won the bronze in the 800m.
It was a strong performance across the four days of competition and MU looks forward to next years competition and challenge Sydney University for the title.

Barker picked in Australian Team for Chiba Ekiden

 

In other news Sophie Barker was selected in her second Australian team of 2013, picked for the Chiba Ekiden team, that will travel to Japan to contest the six member mixed gender relay on 23rd November.  Congratulations Sophie!
