Jells Bells for the start of XCR’12

Jells Park Cross Country Relays

Melbourne University Athletic Club was back in white (with a royal blue sash) on April 21 for the first event of the 2012 Athletics Victoria cross country and road racing season. Jells Park is a 6km relay event, and the club had division 1,2,4 and 6 men’s teams, and division 1 and 2 women’s teams entered.
With all of the men’s teams having been promoted last season, and a number of runners unavailable for a variety of reasons—some of which were good (wedding), and some not so good (had just run 100km)—it was always looking like it may be a tough day at the office.
However, no-one was thunderstruck, and it was excellent to see all runners and club officials demonstrating their willingness to give their all, helping to fill lower division teams, or acting as officials in spite of illness, severed shoulders, or recent marathon-type adventures.
The cannon fired, and the runners were off, like a rock ‘n roll white train around the course. It was a long way to the top, but a seemingly even longer way down the hill to the transition zone, with tired legs freewheeling the final 500 metres.
Of particular note were runs by Charlotte Curnow, who swanned back into the club after an absence of several years to record the fastest MUAC women’s time and Mark Kirwan who ran his first winter race for the club in the 12th fastest time of the day overall. Congratulations too to those who received their first first-team caps: Mark, Laura Portaro, Mel Fayen, Emil Gundesen, Leigh Goedecke, Peter Shearman and Tex Sheldon.  Also congratulations to first time White Train runners, Dave Miller, Nathan McBain
Well done to all who ran, and we look forward to welcoming back all those who didn’t for the next high voltage race at Balnarring Racecourse on Saturday the 5th of May.
