2015 starts with a bang at Nunawading
AV Shield Round 9
The first track and field competition of 2015 has seen MUAC clinch Zone Premierships for both Mens and Womens Division 1. Kicking off the year at Nunawading, on Saturday 10th January, for AV Shield Round 9 and Round 2 of Zone v Zone, MUAC took home two wins from two, with the men winning by more than 200 points, and the women 45 points clear. Holiday training camps at Falls Creek and the Rawlinson Track seem to have paid dividends for MUAC athletes.
The MUAC women were lead by Carmen Deane and Ellen Schaef with Schaef claiming a divisional victory in the 400m and second in the 1500m behind team mate Sophie Barker. Deane and Schaef combined in the relay with vaulters Kath Iannello and Dawn Hartigan (in between vaults!) with Deane running the 100m and hurdles and doing the long jump. Hannah Alderton took a divisional victory in the 100m, whilst Kath Iannello bested all yellow zone vaulters in the pole vault. Kate Scarlett, after a 2000m walk and 1500m, claimed victory in the 3000m steeplechase.
MUAC’s men claimed a dominant victory with Simon Greig first home in the 100m despite a mishap with the starting blocks. Martin Mashford, fresh off a stint at Falls Creek, came within a whisker of a national qualifier in the 1500m and looks to be rounding into great form. Romain Donneux, hunting the club record in the 3000m steeplechase, won in a close battle with St Stephens Ben Buckingham. Aaron Page took out the pole vault-discus double. Matt Irons walked his way to divisional victory in the 2000m walk, lapping the other MUAC competitors.
MUAC athletes will be back in action this Saturday at Aberfeldie for the final round of AV Shield for the season, ahead of the AV Shield Final on Saturday, January 31st at Lakeside Stadium. MUAC will be one of only 5 clubs with Division 1 Womens and Mens teams competing.
